Chapter Five
The Test
Sevil sat himself down at the table on the other side of the room. “No way are you sitting down”, Facts said. “The test is outside. It hasn’t been inside since 953 B.C., the time of the Holma tribe. Boy, they were chaotic.” Outside? Was there an outside in Mohalen? I guess there is if the test is outside, Sevil thought. I guess I should check it out. “But I have a family waiting for me to come home! I can’t make a commitment to stay here all of my life!” He protested. “I forgot to tell you-no time passes in your world, even if you stay here for your life.” Facts answered.
He had been waiting for hours. In fact, it was almost dark out. Facts had brought him to a sort of indoor outdoors. At least, that was the best description Sevil could make. It was a sort of indoor garden in the shape of a circle with a big fancy domes glass roof. It also smelled wonderful, and Facts referred to it as “The atrium”.
Anyway, Facts had left him there with the parting words of “Wait”. Since then, he had waited. All of a sudden, he heard a ding. It was the sort of ding one would hear from an elevator in a fancy hotel. He looked over. Five computers had materialized from what had been a sort of mango tree. He recognize Coalber, Foalber, and Facts. The other two were very official looking. “Let me introduce to you High Black Master Tayboo and High Brown Commander Salamander Meander.”, he said. “You may call me Mr. Ander”, said the smaller but shinier of the new computers. “It is quite a long name to say a lot.” Sevil looked at the other computer. “You must be Tayboo,” he said. “Indeed I am, young computewarrior, Indeed I am.” Responded the other computer.
Sevil was led into a room full of computers. “Sit there.”, said Coalber, gesturing to a hard-looking chair. Sevil sat. His butt hit the plastic, and it instantly molded to cradle his caboose. “Wow!”, he exclaimed. “That’s comfy!” He was really comfortable in that chair. “Just an example of our superior technology here in Mohalen. Wait till you see our new Hereship 3000!” blurted Foalber. “Now, don’t go giving stuff away before he passes the Tortureator! shushed Coalber.
“What?” asked Sevil.
“Oh, it’s really nothing. Just a little joke between the two of us. Don’t go worrying yourself about anything just yet. It’s really not a big deal.” replied Foalber.
“Anyway,” Mr. Ander interjected, “Toodaloo!”
As the computers left the room,(or bashkel, as Sevil later learned they called it), handcuffs sprang up from the chair. As they wrapped around Sevil’s arms, he shouted after the computers, “Hey! I trusted you!” A computer appeared on an overhead TV. It was Coalber. “Of course, and now we can torture you! Oh, how I love earthlingburgers!, Yes, I just love the stuff! So juicy!”
“Oh, yes, so sweet!” said Foalber from somewhere nearby.
“Now, just a minute! You’re not Colber or Foalber! you’re just...just...Images! That’s it, you’re Images!” he said this last part with finality.
“Very intuitive.”, said Tayboo, who had just entered the room. As the handcuffs sprang out of Sevil’s exsistence back into the arms of the chair, he rubbed his chafed wrists. “You have passed the first test and earned the rank of Low White Trainee. If you are like almost everybody else in this facility, you will fly up to at least to High Blue Lieutenant, but maybe even purple, brown, or black. that remains to be seen. Now, for a feast!
Chapter Six
Levels
Oh, the smells! Sevil was a full 100 yards from the banquet hall, and it smelled great. “Wow!”, he exclaimed. “This already tastes good, and I haven’t even seen it!”
“Yes, Sir Trinkle is a good cook, but he is an even better robo fighter!” Sevil thought that that was an understatement. Then they entered the main banquet hall. But this wasn’t a banquet. It was a BANQUET. Yes, it was enormous. Platters of ham, steak, caviar, and the chef’s special, hamburgers with bacon, cheese, mustard, ketchup, onions, lettuce, tomato, and every other burger topping under the sun on both Earth and Mohalen. Also, there was chicken, turkey, and all sorts of other fowl. But the strangest thing he saw was by far the gears. Plates and plates of big gears, small gears, and any gear in between. “What are the gears for?” asked Sevil. “Well, you earthlings may eat meat, but us computers only eat gears, us being machines and all. Oh! I didn’t notice the portabella gears! Yum!” With that, they all fell upon the plates of food.
After the feast, Sevil was stuffed. Well, come to think of it, that was an understatement. He was STUFFED. Also, he was more knowledgeable. He had learned about the different ranks, or levels. All computewarriors started out as Low White Trainees. Then, as you made your way up the ranks, you became first a Low White Soldier, then a Low White Private, then a Middle White Colonel, then Middle White Lieutenant, Then either a High White Lieutenant, or a High White Commander. Then the same for orange, red, blue, green, purple, brown, and black. The only difference was that the only Trainees and Soldiers were White. Otherwise there were no differences. After High Black Commander, you would become a High Black Admiral, then a High Computemaster. To stress how rare these last two are, for two hundred years of this system, there have only been 7 High Computemasters and 12 High Black Admirals. And after that, you became an Ultimate High Master of the Arts. (UHMA). There have only ever been 3 of those.
Anyway, Sevil was now in his barracks. He was Low White Trainee
9442, and he was readier than a burned chicken.
